Lanterns are an excellent way to light up a backyard during the Summer months while adding a fun and playful aesthetic. There are a variety of different lanterns available for you to choose from. Below are a few of my favorites.
Wicker Lanterns: Wicker lanterns are the quintessential sign of Summer. Tying in vibes of the nautical coastline, wicker lanterns are casual and contemporary while adding a sophisticated touch to your backyard.
Tall Metal Lanterns: Metal lanterns help to elevate anyone’s backyard. They are timeless yet chic, and can look great in the front yard or in the backyard. Different size lanterns help to bring depth to any yard. Whether you prefer black, brown or gold, there is something for everyone.
Succulents are an excellent plant for those looking for a low maintenance option. They tend to have muted colors which lends them well to any color palette in your backyard. In addition, they require very little water and care, and will survive just fine when you decide to go on a spur of the moment vacation. Below are a few of my favorite succulents.
Aeonium Mardi Gras: This fun colored succulent has pops of red and pink color that are bright enough to be noticed, but muted enough to blend with a variety of different color palettes. These fun succulents are a perfect way to spruce up your outdoor decor.
Giant Velvet Rose: This is a classic succulent that is used in many succulent arrangements. It’s green earthy color makes sure it will blend with any aesthetic.
Blue Glow Agave: Blue agave is absolutely beautiful and perfect for those who enjoy tequila. It will make you feel like you stepped foot into a posh Mexican resort and is the perfect backdrop for a margarita party or taco Tuesday.
Golden Barrel Cactus: This is one of the larger succulents and will make you feel like you are in a desert oasis. Be sure to keep kids away from this plant as its pointy spines can cause injury.
Purple Beauty: This succulent always reminds me of an artichoke and it works perfectly with any arrangement.
Wicker trays are an absolute must for any outdoor event in the Summer. While all wicker trays may seem similar, there can be big differences in quality based on where you choose to buy one. One of my favorites is the Serena and Lily Scallop Tray. It is handmade which produces a quality piece, while remaining light and versatile. These trays are made to last and will get you through more than just a single Summer. However, if you are looking for an option that is a bit cheaper and meant for a season or two, Target has a lot of excellent options that are versatile, provide a variety of shapes and won’t break the bank. Regardless of what your goal is, wicker trays are the perfect way to add a Summer touch to your outdoor space.
Outdoor rugs are a great way to level up your outdoor decor for the Summer. This is especially true if you are someone who does not love putting a ton of effort into decorating. Outdoor rugs can help to set the color scheme of your backyard and infuse your outdoor space with life, without being overwhelming. There are a variety of different places you can find beautiful outdoor rugs. Some of my favorites include West Elm, rugs.com and local shops in town. Whether you are looking for a statement piece to be the center of your outdoor couch area, or, if you are looking for something small to help fill space in the backyard, rugs are an excellent way to accent a beautiful backyard.
On first thought, you may not feel like you need an outdoor fireplace during the Summer. However, I have found that outdoor fireplaces help to create a center area around which people naturally gather during a Summer BBQ. Fireplaces can be a large expense depending on your style. However, in California, they are something that can be used year round, and add a luxurious vibe to any outdoor space.
Along similar lines is the addition of a pizza oven to your outdoor space. Pizza ovens are an excellent way to keep your guest entertained all through the night. It is also tons of fun for adults and kids alike to make their own pizzas. Run to your nearest Trader Joes, pick up some different kinds of pizza dough, adding some mozzarella and pick out your favorite toppings (pepperoni, bell peppers, tomatoes) and have a “Make Your Own Pizza” Party! This is guaranteed to be something your guests will be talking about for months to come.
As is true with any event, speakers are everything! Whether it is just you and your significant other enjoying the backyard, or if you are hosting a fun BBQ with friends and family, speakers are an important part of setting the right mood. Sonos is the gold standard for outdoor speakers. They are easy to use, intuitive and can link to other speakers throughout your house. This allows your guests to have a seamless experience as they move from indoors to outdoors. Other great speakers include Bose and JBL, both which have linkable speakers that can be places around the backyard and throughout the house.
