I have been loving the no makeup vibe that came with quarantine. Staying at home every day has allowed my skin to breathe and my hair to grow long and strong by steering clear of heat products. However, there is something that makes me feel so great when I am dressed up in full glam. Since we have all been spending so much time at home, take some time and treat yourself to full glam hair and makeup at home. Now that more restaurants are opening up, use it as an excuse to get dressed up for date night, or a nice dinner out with the girls. Or, if you still prefer to stay home, use this as an excuse for a beautiful dinner in the backyard as Spring weather approaches. Below are a few of my best tips to get the most out of your “Glam At Home” experience.
Prep Your Skin and Hair
Makeup artists and hair stylists are amazing at what they do. They have the ability to completely transform the way you look. However, having a good base will always take your makeup and hair to the next level. When it comes to makeup, ensuring your face is freshly washed, exfoliated and moisturized will help the makeup to sit better. Below are a few of my favorite products to use when I prep for a “Glam” experience.
OsmosisMD Gentle Cleanser: When prepping your skin for makeup, it is important to use a good quality cleanser that will not agitate your skin, especially if you plan to exfoliate. This gentle cleanser works to remove dirt and excess oil from your skin without dehydrating the skin.
Obagi Exfoliating Polish: The key to smooth skin if exfoliating a couple times a week. This helps to remove dead skin cells along with dry skin to expose healthy new skin underneath. Most exfoliants are either too harsh, creating micro tears in the skin, or too light, not having any kind of measurable effect on the skin. The Obagi Exfoliating Polish is the holy grail of exfoliants. After using, you will experience a clean, smooth and even toned complexion that acts as the perfect base to any makeup.
Belif Moisturizing Bomb: Moisturizing is the last crucial step in prepping your skin for full glam makeup. Be sure to apply moisturizer at least 30 minutes before makeup is applied to ensure it has time to soak into the skin. Belif Moisturizing Bomb is an ideal moisturizer because it provides ample hydration without leaving behind an oily film that could cause makeup not to stick.
When it comes to your hair, whether or not to wash it the day of style may depend on the style you are getting done. In this case, it is best to speak with your hair stylist ahead of time, show them a picture of the style you are looking for and ask their preference on whether you come with freshly washed hair or day old hair. In either case, you will want to make sure your hair is fully dry when the stylist arrives. If you make a mistake and wash your hair when they have asked you not to, or vice versa, do not worry. Dry shampoo and powder hair texturizer can help your stylist to achieve the look they are going for.
Timing
Another important factor in making sure your hair and makeup glam looks the best is the timing of when you get your service done. Depending on what you want, hair and makeup can take 40-90 minutes each. The length of each service is dependent on the amount of hair you have, how complicated the style is, and how complicated your makeup request may be. As a result, you will want to schedule your appointment for at least 3 hours before the event. If you schedule too far before, your makeup and hair may not look fresh. However, if you schedule too close to the event, you may end up rushing which can make you feel stressed out. 3 hours before your event will give you ample time to get ready, even with complex hair and makeup. Regardless of when you book your appointment, be sure to use a shade of lipstick that you own. Whether your appointment is one hour before your event or 4 hours before, lipstick is usually the quickest part of glam to fade. This is because eating and drinking slowly removes the amount of pigment on your lips. Having the lipstick used for your glam on hand, ensures a fresh look all throughout the evening.
Choose the Artist
When it comes to makeup and hair, choosing an artist is all about personal preference. Some artists are great with doing natural looks, while other artists are amazing at extreme looks. My advice is to research the artists to determine which ones you tend to gravitate towards. I have found some of the best makeup artists and hair stylists by searching #lamakeupartists and #lahairstylists on Instagram. There are tons of artists and stylists in the LA area, but this tactic can also work for other cities. Referrals are another excellent way to find artists that your friends and families have used and loved.
Set the Vibe
Most of the time, when you get your makeup and hair done in a salon, there is a fun vibe. Mimosas, pretty decor and fun music playing in the background for you to enjoy. However, just because you are getting your glam done in your own home, doesn’t mean you can’t make the most of it. First off, make sure you have your favorite robe to throw on while you get glammed up. This ensures that you will not ruin your hair or makeup while trying to take off a t-shirt. It’s also the most comfortable thing to wear while you are sitting down for a long time. Next, get your best speakers out and put together a fun girly playlist. Think Ariana Grande, Doja Cat, DaniLeigh and more. Tie it all together with a candle that puts you completely at ease. This is your time to pamper yourself and you deserve to enjoy every last bit of it.
